The horizon
Year on year I find myself in a state of change, it often comes around the December period as we look into the new year. This year’s change is bigger than ever, on the 12th December we move house.
8 beings (2 parents, 5 dependants and 1 cat) all under a new roof, one we will call our home. A canvas to be crafted over the years to come, to be layered with new stories that will be our fond memories. Some of our past will follow us there, to keep us grounded in who we are and ‘how’ we’ve become.
Why is any of this important in a professional context? Well because we are not our work and our work does not happen outside of our life, like some separated and isolated act that does not impact upon our home. If anything, our home and all those who reside within it inextricably impact upon our work. The highs and lows of life whilst can be managed and mediated, inevitably will push and pull at what we do for our clients.
Those of you who know me well, may know my philosophy. That my work must grow me and my business must serve my family. The 8 of us in our new space and those who we are deeply connected to through blood and love. 2025 is no different, the work I do must align with who I am and how I wish to live in order to be what my family (and I) need.
Looking ahead
As I look ahead into 2025 I find myself asking – What am I interested in? Its such an easy question to answer:
1: My passion project – fuelled by my own divergent mind #Dyslexic, making the science of learning more accessible #ASRI. There’s a book ahead I believe
2: The stuff that stretches me – Decommissioning in the energy sector (gas, oil, renewables and nuclear). This is a rich ground for curious learning
3: The stuff that makes a difference directly – like the Boys Move project with the Youth Sport Trust.
4: Finding my tribe – the #LnDGathering a collective of invested peers, has become a great space for sharing, learning and experimenting
5: Sharing quiet voices – the resurgence of the ‘Learning Scientist Magazine’. More untold stories from great humans
6: Making time to meet more new people – strangers who are yet to be friends. Please feel free to nudge me, be it an in person walk and talk or a zoom chat (exploring our minds, our work and where we can, our environment)
I am excited by the unknown opportunities that lay ahead, particularly the unexpected clients and the outlier work. 2024 has been a great year for this – and I thank each of you for stepping towards what may have felt uneasy.
2025
Be More Learning and Development Limited will head into 2025 with the same energy and desire it began with. It will have an evolved mission to serve its changing client base, its growing community and more so its loved ones.
Whilst generating an income will always be important as the money from the work I do benefits my family, the time I spend with them is more valuable and a greater investment in their future than money in the bank. I look forward to working with those clients who continue to see this as a reason for working with me, rather than a reason to not – #FamilyFirst.
If you find yourself considering your next evolution, start with these simple questions:
- What does the world need from you?
- What will bring you joy that others will pay for?
- Where do the people who need you hangout?
Then just go say hi!
What does the world need from me right now?
For me to be a little better each day at what I do, this is my ‘work in progress’
What brings me joy that others will pay for?
Outside of the things listed above, it’s to live beyond social convention. I don’t mean anything weird, just to live without the constraints of social norms.
To avoid conformity at the expense of me and embrace my ‘will to power*’ but not at the expense of you!
*the concept of actualising one’s self within one’s surroundings (self-determination)
Where do the people who need me hangout?
I’m holding a smile and saying high wherever I go, I’m saying hi now through this story. I’m sharing with you an invite to say hello back. Be the stranger who becomes a friend.
In closing
We are all in continual evolution, shaped by the interplay of our personal and professional worlds.
As I step into this next chapter, new home, fresh perspectives – to those who journey with me, clients, colleagues, family and friends thank you for being part of this unfolding story. Together, let’s embrace change, create meaning, and build connections that matter. Here’s to a 2025 filled with curiosity, courage, and collaboration.
